Review in Progress: Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Hard as Wraps Powerful Acrylic Gel

NOTE: This product is still going through testing and comparison, but I wanted keep you updated about my immediate likes and dislikes!

Pink Gel Coat is one of the more recent products I have come across as a slick way to repair damaged nails. My grandma gave me a bottle she wasn't using and, after a recent run-in with some at-home acrylic nails (review to come later) I needed it! But, at $30 for .6 oz. of product, the kind of results I was going to get wasn't going to be sustainable for my pocketbook. Girlfriends gotta eat! So, while doing my occasional once over of the drugstore makeup section, I stumbled across this little guy.
Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Hard as Wraps Powerful Acrylic Gel ($6.79 at your local CVS)

The packaging describes it as "A breakthrough patented gel that protects & strengthens fragile, soft or damaged nails." So, pretty much the same thing as Pink Gel Coat. Plus, with a bottle like that, it is ASKING to be a dupe. So, I caved and bought it.

The instructions say "Apply 1 coat to bare nails. Let dry. Use alone or as a base coat." Now, I have already tried it as a base coat in hopes that the hard, acrylic consistency would make for a longer lasting mani. This is a DON'T. The texture is so thick that your nail polish takes forever to dry and you inevitable end up with nicks and smudges in your polish. Another consistency issue I had was that if you leave the bottle open too long, it gets stringy. Weird, right? This, however wasn't a major issue, just a tiny gripe.

So, it's not a base coat. Does it strengthen your nails? Well, my friends, THAT is what I'm currently finding out. It will take a while because I am going to treat it like Pink Gel Coat and apply once a week, but I will keep you updated. Just for reference, here are some before pics:

As you can see, there is some MAJOR shine. I like. But will it do what it says and repair my poor, damaged nails? Check back later and see...
