Review & Swatchfest: ELF Matte Lip Color in Natural & Tea Rose

I've been intrigued by ELF's Mate Lip Cream for ages, but haven't been able to caught up the cash for shipping. Then, right before spring break, I found them in my Target along with some other newly added goodies (including a pigment that will be up for review later this week)! All of the shades they had were very nudy & natural looking, so I picked the two that looked the most distinctly different: Natural and Tea Rose.

ELF Matte Lip Color in Natural

Natural is a warm, peach-based nude - almost an apricot.

Tea Rose is a cool, dusty rose with plummy undertones.

The two swatched together; Tea Rose on top and Natural on the bottom.

As with most matte lip products, texture is the primary concern. To get your lips to look matte without looking like dry, flaky messes is difficult. While the texture of these isn't completely awful, they are pretty unforgiving. My lips were going through a bit of a dry patch and, although I exfoliated as best I could before applying, they still looked, and felt, a little worse for the wear after application. Another sign of a formula that's too dry is how much it pulls at your lips during application; these pulled somewhat, but not unbearably so. With all of these "meh" aspects of these lip colors, I feel I should point out that they are only $3, so you it might just be that I got what I paid for. To contrast, I reviewed the Tarte Lipsurgence Matte Lip Tint that typically retails for $24 and had nothing but excellent things to say about it...but it's also $24. Do with that what you will.

On the bright side, I like that the shape of the product is narrow and, at least at first, has a relatively precise tip to navigate around the edges of the lips. The colors are also great for "blanking" out lips or getting more of a natural lip look. They are somewhat long wearing; they lasted about 4 hours before truly calling it quits on me.

If you are after an affordable matte lip in a somewhat narrow shade range, you hold try these out. To avoid shipping costs, try to find them at your local Target! If, on the other hand, you are really just looking for one stellar matte lip color, save your pennies for the big time and invest in something like Tarte's Lipsurgence Matte Lip Tint.
