Returning readers of Making Up the Midwest will know that I am an eye
primer-alholic. Although I've found a few amazing skin toned primers
that work well for everyday wear, I always love to be able to
transform shadows with a colored base or find a stellar pigmented
cream shadow that performs well all on its own. My next conquest is
the Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color and I have to say that these
are some of the most unique cream eye shadow/bases I have come
across.
Like
many cream shadows on the market, Shiseido's Shimmering Cream Shadows
promise 16 hour wear without smudging or creasing and claims to
hydrate skin with "Super Hydro-Wrap Vitalizing DE" - an original component formulated by Shiseido. Personally, I
didn't find any extra hydration. In fact, these shadows dry very
quickly to a powder and so don't provide much time to work an
eyeshadow over. It's great if you have really oily lids and/or are
strictly looking for a cream shadow.
Something else I observed was that the shimmer is the first thing to wear off. While the color easily lives up to the 16 hour claims, the shimmer was gone at around hour 8. Not a complaint, as I can't see myself needing a shadow (more specifically the shimmer) to stay on for 8 hours without a touch up, but an observation. Something else to mention when talking shimmer is that there is quite a bit of it in all of them. If you aren't a shimmer person, these are not for you.
These shadows are also unique in that they feel cool to the skin when first applied. I don't keep mine in a particularly cool location, so I attribute it to something in the formula. Either way, it's very refreshing and now I'm always tempted to apply it to my whole face on a hot summer day (it's that noticeable!).
Overall, the Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Colors are wonderful shadows, but plan on using a clear sticky primer over them if you are looking to use them as a colored base. Also head the warning about the shimmer. Matte lovers beware. At $25 a product, these are an investment. So, I would recommend this line to someone who is looking for a staple cream shadow in their collection. These are perfect for providing anywhere from a sheer to opaque wash of color all over the lid and can even be blended together if you work quickly enough and work one eye at a time.
