Review: Shu Uemura Volume Maker Invisible Texturizer

Shu Uemura Art of Hair Volume Maker

Shu Uemura's Art of Hair Volume Maker is a reinvention of the hair product I love the most: texturizing powder. From pumping up my naturally flat hair, to freshening up second day locks with a sprinkling at the root, hair powered has always been my must-have hair product. The problem I've found with all of the texturizing powders I've tried is that they don't have any way to control the amount of powder you pour on your hair. Nothing is worse than opening up a fresh package of product only to over-sprinkle and create a sticky, matted mess at the roots. Shu Uemura's Volume Maker fixes this problem by putting the powder in a pump dispenser with a blush brush-type applicator. This not only eliminates over application, but allows you to spread the product around at the roots rather than letting it sit farther down the strand.

When I first used the Volume Maker, there was a slight learning curve. The brush applicator makes it hard to see just how much product is coming out with one pump. But, after a little trial and error, I found that three pumps per application area is the right amount for me. Once the product is down, I used the brush to diffuse the product throughout the scalp. Once there, it stayed all day and kept my second day hair from looking like a greasy mess.

The one downside to this product is the price tag. Shu Uemura is known for being a high-end hair brand, so the $48 price is unsurprising, but still a little steep. To me, this is a justified purchase if you are a lover of hair texturizer and you enjoy the convenience of this application method. Could it be replicated with a $10 hair texturizer and a brush you cast out of a drugstore blush palette? Of course, but part of the allure of this product is its convenience.
