Review, Swatchfest, & Comparison: Maybelline Limited Edition Color Show Nail Lacquer in Downtown Brown

Maybelline Color Show Nail Lacquer in Downtown Brown

Of all of the new releases with the new Maybelline collection, Downtown Brown was the most attractive nail lacquer to me because it has an intriguing duo chrome finish. After bringing it home, however, I found that it's not only duped by a MAC pigment, but also another shade within the same fall Maybelling collection. Read on to learn more!

Before starting with the dupes, I'll give the polish itself a review. Downtown Brown is a red-tinged brown with a green-leaning turquoise reflect. One coat provides semi-sheer coverage and two makes the polish mostly opaque, although I had to add a third coat to a few nails to get complete coverage. The nice thing is that the formula is thin enough so that even three coats dries in a reasonable time. From my experience with other polishes in this line, wear time ranges from two to four days without tip-wear - pretty average for my nails.

After looking through my collection to find similar polishes, I ended up discovering a dupe in an unsuspecting place: my pigments and eyeshadows. MAC's Blue Brown pigment has a slightly bluer reflect, but the red-brown base is exactly the same and, when mixed with a clear polish, creates a very similar effect, but with a slightly cloudier teal finish. Wear time with this shade will depending on the polish you mix the pigment with.

After looking at some shadows from Maybelline's fall collection, I also fond that a duo chrome shade from the Olive Martini quad would create the same effect. While creating a polish with a pressed shadow is slightly tricker than using a pigment, it is possible as Amber with Makeup Geek shows us in one of her latest tutorials! To see a review and swatches of that and another palette I picked up from this collection, check back later!
