Review & Swatchfest: NYC City Duet 2 in 1 Lip Color in The Red Hots and The Vintage Pinks

NYC City Duet 2 in 1 Lip Color in The Red Hots
NYC's City Duet 2 in 1 Lip Colors give you some serious bang for your buck. For $2.99, you get two lip colors and spectrum of potential looks. While they aren't the most moisturizing product you will ever put on your lips, the texture is creamy and applies evenly, they have excellent color payoff and opacity, and the lasting power isn't awful either. The applicators are slightly different from the typical lipstick bullet shape which, I thought, led to a less precise application (reflected in the lip swatches). But that can easily be overcome by using a lip brush or lining the lips. These are also a great way to start rocking the ombré lip trend that is going strong well into fall. In a $20 challenge I did, I used The Vintage Pinks to create the look of a lighter lip in the center bleeding into a darker pink toward the lip border. If you aren't one to rock an ombré lip, some of these duos are the perfect thing for an on-the-go day to night transition. Use the lighter shade as a day lip color and then add some drama and vamp by applying the darker shade heading into the night.

Speaking of colors, The Red Hots is a light pinky coral and red duo. Both shades have cream finished without any shimmer or frost and are on the cooler side. Sometimes it's hard to find a good, inexpensive lipstick that isn't heavily shimmery or frosted (ahem, Wet n' Wild). While I didn't notice much of a difference between the red shade alone and the red shade mixed with the coral, this would be the perfect duo for a deep fall ombré lip.

The Vintage Pinks has a heavily frosted peony shade and a deeper, less frosted purple tinged pink. Together, they create an ultra shimmery version of the darker shade. This is perfect for those looking to get a plumper lip look. Use the frostier shade on the center of the top and bottom lips to create a seriously pouty effect. The pigment in this duo didn't last as long as that in the The Red Hots. While they lasted a while (2+ hours), the color was gone long before the shimmer/frost was worn away.

Overall, these are great drugstore duos and give you quite a few options for one product. Whether you are pinching pennies or not, I would recommend giving these a try - especially the shades with cream finishes.
