Review & Swatchfest: Pop Peak Performance Mascara in Brilliant Black, Inky Indigo, and Cocoa Charm

Pop Peak Performance Mascara

With brands trying to differentiate their mascara with different wands, formulas, and even added extras like fibers, Pop Beauty's Peak Performance Mascara completely changes the lash-enhancing game by morphing the wand and tube into one element. This twist up applicator functions similarly to automatic lip glosses that dispense product into the tip. Instead of a fluffy doe-foot applicator on the end of this pencil, there is a row of flexible plastic spines, through which mascara is dispensed - ready to be applied. While this difference in packaging will force you to change your application technique slightly, it might be worth it for the results you can get with it and the formula of the product inside.

Peak Performance Mascara comes in three shades, brilliant black, inky indigo, and cocoa charm, so that even those that like to deviate from the typical black shade can indulge in this mascara, should they like it. The formula is very wet, so it coats lashes thoroughly, but can take a much longer time to dry. Once it dries, however, the formula is similar to that of the tubing mascara from blinc. That means that there is absolutely no smudging, running, or flaking until you are ready to use some warm water to take it off.

While some may be formula fanatics, and find this flake-free quality to be enough, others will want to know about what this mascara does for the looks of your lashes. Like any mascara, depending on how you apply this particular formula, you can get a good curl and it stays all day. Clumping, however, can be an issue. The formula can really lengthen lashes, but, because it's so wet, it tends to make them stick together. Be prepared to use a lash comb if you are used to naturally defined lashes.

The deviation from the typical wand and tube doesn't particularly help the application process, but it doesn't hurt it either. The shape of the comb makes the typical mascara flubs difficult to do. No more worrying about large wands smudging your inner corner! Something to be careful of, however, is that you don't let excess mascara clump the dispenser. Although it hasn't clogged yet, mascara that I left on the comb dried and clumped slightly. While it didn't clog the dispenser by any means, I could see this being a problem in the future, so it's an extra step you need to get used to taking every few times you use it.

Verdict:

This mascara definitely has some great qualities. While it might not jump out as a must-have, it's a great option if you are in the market for a new alternative. Those looking for in-your-face colors might not find this color selection to be their thing, but those looking for a more natural look will like the shaded cocoa charm, while those with blue or brown eyes might like the subtle twist inky indigo gives their look. Pop Beauty's Peak Performance Mascara is available for $20 at ULTA.
