Review: Milani Smooth Finish Oil Free Cream-to-Powder Makeup in Buff

Milani Cosmetics is somewhat uncharted territory for me when it comes to drugstore makeup. When looking for new products to try, brand awareness always draws me toward big dogs like L'Oréal or Maybelline, but in reality loads of people swear by Milani products as their must-have makeup items. While on sale one week, I decided to get a nice sampling of products from the brand and, in an attempt at finding a hidden drugstore foundation gem, I picked up the Smooth Finish Oil Free Cream-to-Powder Makeup in Buff

With the promise to smooth and even out skin tone, this foundation is supposed to transform from a cream finish to a powder one while maintain a healthy moisture balance for all skin types. As someone with combination skin, I'm never looking for additional moisture beyond what my skin care provides for fear I will end up looking like a grease ball by the end of the day. But the powder finish Milani's foundation promised had me at Hello and got me eager to put it to the test.

Coverage is buildable but stops just beyond medium with the ability to even out skin tone and cover minor discolorations, but not able to fully cover redness from healing breakouts. Once applied, I found that the finish definitely changed from being completely creamy, but I wouldn't say it dried down to a powder. I had the strong urge to set it with something because it felt like it could easily move around throughout the day. Worn unprimed and unset, I had some pretty evident shine happening at the 10 hour mark. My concealer had worn away and it looked like my blush and bronzer had taken a little pigment hit too - although they didn't appear spotty. While the coverage was well maintained overall, on my combination skin type, I would say this definitely needs some extra security to keep it iron-clad throughout the day. Is it a must-have for me? No. But it might be a great option for those with dry skin types - especially as we head into fall and winter. With a $7.99 price tag, it won't break the bank either!

The 11 shades in the line might not provide a match for everyone, but there are quite a few deeper tones which is rare amongst drugstore foundations and great news for those that struggle to find them! Still, you have to be careful with how you apply this and the conditions under which you wear it if you have an Oily or Combination skin type. Take care to prime and powder to prevent it from going anywhere!
