Review & Swatches: City Color Eyeshadow in The Greens and Browns

City Color Eyeshadow in The Greens and Browns
City Color is a brand that offers good products at highly affordable prices, but because I've never seen them in stores I've always had to direct those curious about them to the City Color website. After comments from readers and viewers suggesting they've found the brand at Rite Aid, I finally made my way to one to investigate. Wouldn't you know, they were right! While the selection isn't huge, some Rite Aids carry eyeshadow palettes and lip balms - I had to try!

The eyeshadow palette in The Greens and Browns contains just that - a selection of 6 green and taupe-brown eyeshadows. Always a sucker for the color combination, I was sold! Among the greens, there's an antique gold shade, lime green, and forest green while the browns are a mix of light and medium purple-toned taupes and a light frosted champagne. While there are no matte shades in the bunch, the shimmer in these is ultra fine and almost appears as a satin finish. The shadows are very smooth, ultra pigmented, and have good lasting power when worn over primer.

At $2.99, this is a shadow combination that can't be beat. For those that love Wet n Wild's Comfort Zone Palette, you will adore this one!

Crown Brush on Hautelook - Great Steals!

Crown Brush is on Hautelook so, as usual, I want to give you my 2 cents on what to snag and what to skip! While they don't have the Pink 15 Brush Set I've reviewed before, they have pieces of it in a 7 piece travel set along with a brush roll - well worth the 15 is you are looking to expand your brush collection. I also recommend the 10 Pan Blush Palette as a great started kit for blushes and bronzers.

The real news I wanted to share on this event was the availability of Crown Brush's Infinity line. They are nearly identical to the Sigma Precision Brush Set but $16 for 4 instead of $54. There are some noticeable differences, but for all practical purposes they are functionally the same. They are some of my favorite brushes in my collection so I really recommend you check them out!

Hot Dish Must-Haves: Top 5 Red Drugstore Lips

Some love them for special occasions while others can't walk out the door without them. No matter how you wear your red lip, every girl has to have one and it shouldn't cost a fortune. Here are my top 5 red lipstick picks from the drugstore.
  1. The Satin Red – Although not technically a satin lipstick, Rimmel's Lasting Finish Matte Lipstick by Kate Moss in Kiss of Life has a subtle sheen to it when worn. From it's even application to its intense opacity with one swipe, this neutral red flatters both warm and cool skin tones and lasts .

  2. The Versatile Red - NYC's City Duet 2-in-1 in The Red Hots is easily the cheapest red lip to make the list, yet it gives you three lip colors in 1! One one side is a blue-based red while the other has more of a medium salmon. Worn alone they give a great day-to-night contrast, but combine them and get a happy medium. Versatility combined with a creamy texture and longer-than-average wear pushes this cheapie into the top 5!

  3. The Orange-Red – Kardashian Beauty's Joystick Lip Lacquers shocked me with their smooth texture and lasting power. Retro Red is an orange-leaning red with a nearly-matte finish. It's supremely opaque and wears evenly throughout the day. Bonus: the tapered tip makes staying in the lines with this bold color a breeze!

  4. The Matte Red – Affordable matte lipsticks are hard to come by. If they don't dry your lips out, they wear off in into a flaky, uneven mess. NYX Matt Lipstick in Perfect Red is a diamond in the rough with its smooth texture and long-lasting, even wear. While I won't say it hydrates, it certainly doesn't dry lips out which is a vast improvement.

  5. The Balmy Red – While a matte lip will instantly give any look a classic, retro vibe, sometimes a girl has to have a sheen to emphasize her pout. L'Oréal's Colour Riche Lipcolour in British Red is a blue-based lipstick that provides the opacity of a lipstick with more of a creamy balm finish for a healthy lip look. Alternatively, you could opt for an actual balm like Revlon's Lip Butter in Candy Apple – not quite as opaque, but it provides the same balm-finish.

Review: NYC Sky Rise Lengthening Mascara

NYC Sky Rise Lengthening Mascara

As I made my Top 5 In Under 5: Drugstore Mascaras video, I realized that one of my favorites had gone un-reviewed! NYC's Sky Rise Lengthening Mascara might be the cheapest mascara I own, yet one I reach more the most. At first I found the formula to be a little thin, but like any mascara it thickened up once open for about a week. The new texture combined with the long, spiral wand with evenly spaced bristles creates the perfect storm for super long and slightly curled lashes. The thin wand even makes a good lower lash applicator for those worried about spider-like bottom lashes. Additionally, while not explicitly called waterproof, this formula hadn't smudged or flaked on me - even in the most undesirable conditions. It has all the benefits of a waterproof mascara without the hassle of removal.

All-in-all, $1.99 for this mascara is absolutely unbeatable. Run, don't walk, to get yours now!

Review & Swatches: Jesse's Girl 9 Pan Palette in Brown Eyed Girl

Jesse's Girl 9 Pan Palette in Brown Eyed Girl

Jesse's Girl 9 Pan Palettes might be one of the best kept secrets at the drugstore. The brand is only available at Rite Aid, so it's not as widely known as most other drugstore brands. But that shouldn't stop anyone from singing the praises of these palettes from the rooftops!

The 9 Pan Palette in Brown Eyed Girl is full of warm orange and terra cotta tones. While some might see that as a reason to stay as far away as possible, they aren't as scary as they might look. With a light yellow-toned champagne, warm medium orange, cool light mauve, medium-deep warm burgundy, and a medium-deep chocolate brown, this palette has a great mix between fun and staple shades. All of the shadows have a frosted finish, but don't have any chunky sparkle to speak of and apply smoothly and evenly. The only thing this palette might be missing is a deep shade or two. It's hard to really add depth to the outer corner without a deep chocolate brown or black. If I haven't convinced you that this palette nothing to be afraid of, check out some of the other 9 Pan Palettes. The Eyes Have It is full of sultry greens and antique golds that are more subdued and safer. The entire range retails for $3.99 which is an absolute steal no matter how you look at it!

No Rite Aid nearby? You can purchase all of the Jesse's Girl products right from JessesGirl.com – including the JulieG polish line. Get your wallets ready because this ins one affordable palette to have.

Review & Swatches: NYX Cream Blush in Natural

NYX Cream Blush in Natural

A few days ago, I raved about the benefits of switching to cream blush for the summer in a review of Revlon's PhotoReady Cream Blush in Coral Reef. Given how popular cream blushes are throughout the season, I'm back with another affordable option for those that are still going strong with their summer makeup routine!

NYX's Cream Blush in Natural is a soft dusty rose that appears to have more brown undertones when in the pan, but leans more pink when applied. While it might fall flat on deep skin tones, I think it could flatter a wide range of light to medium shades with both warm, neutral and cool undertones. It's very smooth and creamy, but seemed stickier than I might like at first. Swatched heavily, it maintains a thicker, tackier consistency. But once blended, it doesn't take long for it to dry down to something of a powder finish – perfect for a long-lasting cream blush. And this blush is long-lasting! Considering how affordable is at $, I expected it to be relatively short-lived. Not so! I found it wore evenly throughout the day and even when it started fading around the 9 hour mark, it did so evenly. The blush is buildable, but there's obviously a point where it will reach max capacity and regain the same sticky texture that comes with a heavy swatch. Still, I I'm not sure how practical that kind of pigmentation is for anyone.

Bravo, NYX! This is a superb and affordable product that should be on any cream blush-lover's to-buy list.

My Cashmere Blowout at George the salon

Credit: George the Salon

George the Salon - where the magic happens

George the Salon - the wait space

There's a new blowout in town! George Gonzalez, Director and Stylist at George the Salon has set the standard for hair that's big and billowy, but as soft as cashmere. Nestled in Chicago's North Shore, the salon now offers a new treatment called the Cashmere Blowout! Created by George himself, the treatment includes elixirs and potions rich with cashmere proteins, fortifying oils, and marine derivative rich minerals that leave hair voluminous and full of life, yet soft and so touchable. Don't believe me? I was lucky enough to get to get treated to the experience myself!

My trip to George the Salon started with rinse. After waiting on the plush velveteen couches for my appointment, I made my way to the back room to get a full wash and condition along with a relaxing scalp massage. Once I met my stylist, she made quick work of getting my hair prepped and primed for the main event. She first started at the roots with a texture enhancing spray that contains a blend of cashmere proteins and minerals. Next was a spritzing of a mix containing four good-for-your oils that act as a heat protectant and strand-smoother. Then the blow-drying started. If I'm being honest, this is a very general recreation of what went down because I was so busy chatting (read: begging for the secret to make my fine, scraggly hair grow up and behave) and taking in the view of the city that I only vaguely remember this part. It wasn't until the big reveal that I snapped back to it. Once everything was finger-combed out, I looked in the mirror to see a girl with a 'do that deserved a spot in a hair mag. It was that good. Not only did it smell and feel amazing, but I've never had hair so big - and that's coming from a girl born and raised in Texas.

Because I got my blowout done in the evening, one of my first questions was, "How do I refresh it tomorrow morning?" Simple. A little dry shampoo or texturizing powder at the roots and some round brushing or light work with a curling iron if you feel you need it. Worked like a charm!

This service retails for $50 and I couldn't recommend it more. Whether it's for a company party, a fast-approaching wedding, or even just a confidence boost, this is a more affordable blowout that brings big results - especially for fine hair. And take it from me, you haven't felt a pep in your step until you've had big, bouncy hair.

Check out the results below!
