How to Get Curls That Stay for Fine Hair

Growing up, I always had thick, bountiful hair. For whatever reason, it thinned out in high school and it hasn't recovered since. But it wasn't just the texture that changed - it was the ability to hold a style. Now my hair is naturally as straight and flat as it gets, and any attempt to curl or manipulate it is brutally rebuffed. At my wits end, I made a trip to ULTA and shared my plight with a sales associate. Sensing my desperation, she handed me KMS Hair Stay Style Boost and said, "If this doesn't work, I don't know what will." The rest is history! It helps my hair hold curl all day while still allowing it mobility, and even gives second-day hair some serious oomph! Integrated with the rest of my hair routine, I have the perfect balance of style and volume. To celebrate my hair revelation, I wanted to share my routine for getting loose curls that stay all day - enjoy!

6 Solutions to Your Last Minute Costume Dilemma

It's the day before Halloween and in your desperation to find a last-minute costume, you find yourself staring at your closet hoping you find that Miley-esque outfit you forgot you had. We've all been there. Life happens and sometimes you don't have hours to spare making that next-level roller coaster group costume you wanted to finally do this year. That's when you turn to makeup. Whether you're doing it yourself or having it done for you, makeup can bring out the best (or the best of the worst) in your Halloween costume. MAKE UP FOR EVER is offering up some last-minute fixes to your costume dilemmas this year with inspirational looks and even the opportunity to take the burden of planning your costume completely off your shoulders!

From October 25th - November 2nd, you can pop into MAKE UP FOR EVER boutiques (both standalone and in Sephora) to get your makeup done - and we aren't talking about a light lipstick application and powder touch-up. This is the full-meal-deal. For $100 (about the price of some costumes that will fall apart before the night even ends), you can get a full face of makeup with lite FX. Skip the costume altogether and for $175 you can get your face, neck, shoulders, and hands taken care of as well. Don't have a boutique nearby? They've provided some inspirational face charts that I was dying to share once I saw them. Check them out below!

For all the tutorials I've done this year, I still find myself clueless as to what I'm going to be this year. Now, I think a masquerade mask or vampire is in my future... do you have your costume planned yet?

Review & Swatches: Revlon Matte & Lacquer Balms

Revlon Matte Balm in Showy & Lacquer Balm in Provocateur

PROS:

  • Apply smoothly
  • Nearly opaque
  • Pleasant peppermint smell
  • Lacquer Balm applies evenly
  • Matte Balm doesn't dry lips out
  • Neither dry my lips out

CONS:

  • Matte Balm can get streaky
  • Matte Balm can emphasize dryness
  • Neither add a tone of moisture to my lips
  • Lacquer Balm has similar finish & wear quality as original formula
  • Neither have lasting time as long as original formula
Overall these aren't bad, but it seems like the only thing they have in common with the original formula is the packaging and scent. Don't look for a long wear-time out of these and anticipate the matte shades being a little finicky. Other than that, however, if you see a color you like, it might be worth checking out!

Review & Swatches: Etude House & Rose Flowering Eyes Palette

Etude House & Rose Flowering Eyes Palette

For those who prefer looking at the world through rose-colored eyeshadows, I have a palette for you! Etude House's floral-themed collection is full of a range of products teaming with everything from light pinks to bold berries and the & Rose Flowering Eyes Palette is the perfect representation of that.

At $25.19, it contains 10 eyeshadows - 5 neutral shades, and 5 berry-toned hues - and includes matte, satin, shimmery, and glittery textures. While the brighter colors reflect the rose theme perfectly, the neutrals are a welcome addition that turn what could be an intimidating palette into a wearable one. Overall the shadow quality is impressive - even the matte shadows apply smoothly and evenly for the most part, and each shadow easily blends seamlessly into the next. The packaging is a thin, sleek and compact plastic case that feels light yet durable and even comes with a long mirror with decent surface area for application help.

Etude House's & Rose Flowering Eyes Palette is a great palette for the price and had a color combination that makes it ideal for anyone who wants a healthy balance of neutrals and berries in their life. Another win for Etude House! For more must-haves from this collection, check out the Rosy Lip Tints!

Review & Swatches: Etude House Rosy Lip Tints in #5 & #8

Etude House Rosy Lip Tints in #5 & #8

Matte is a trend that makes a comeback nearly every year, yet there are so many products that are still doing it wrong. Whether they are too patchy, too caky, or too drying, there are too many ways a matte formula can take your look from glam to gross. This season, dramatic matte lips are the thing to have, so I was excited to try Etude House's Rosy Lip Tints.

Despite the thin consistency "tint" typically connotes, Rosy Lip Tints are actually mousse-based lip products that apply opaquely and stain the lips with a bold matte finish. #5 is a mid-tone bubblegum pink while #8 is a deep berry. Both have buttery smooth textures that evenly cover the lips without streaking or getting patchy. The texture is odd in that it doesn't sink into lips, yet it doesn't sit on top and dry out to a flaky, crackled mess. It's the perfect opaque stain that lasts hours (about 5 with beverages, to be exact) without drying out lips. In short, since first using it, Etude House's Rosy Lip Tints have quickly shot to the top of my list of matte-finish lippies. The packaging is a squeeze tube that comes with a sponge-tip to apply and blend product in one go. It's not my favorite, but you can also dispense it directly onto your finger for quick application.

You can purchase Rosy Lip Tints for $9.89 from KollectionK. If you love the matte lip trend, these are the way to go and the price can't be beat!

October Your Bijoux Box

Looking to change things up in the bling department? If you're like me, makeup takes center stage during my morning routine leaving jewelry and accessories in the dust. I would like to think it's lack of inspiration rather than lack of creativity given how my makeup stash outweighs my accessories, but it can't hurt to have a little more of both in my morning routine. Enter Your Bijoux Box!

For $35-$40 a month, you can have hand curated jewelry delivered to your doorstep each month. In addition to being able to keep the 3-4 pieces you receive for your own stash each month, Bijoux Box maintains a blog that provides tips and style inspiration along with fab fashion, beauty, and lifestyle finds the curators are loving for the month. While you won't know what will come inside your box each month, it's guaranteed to be worth at least $70! Check out what's in October's box:

October's Your Bijoux Box:

  • Gilded Clover Necklace
  • Gilded Clover Earrings
  • Cabochon Petals Necklace
  • Coupon for FREE piece of jewelry with a new subscription

The jewelry comes individually placed in velveteen satchels packed in light blue paper. Despite the affordability, the jewelry has some heft (without weighing you down) and feels like it has some lasting power. I also find that while the pieces might not be what I would pick out for myself, they are versatile and easily incorporated themselves into my daily wardrobe (I'm wearing the Gilded Clover Necklace as I type!). Overall, I really like Bijoux Box and their stylish additions to my accessories collection!

Catching Fire Halloween Look & $100 Sephora GIVEAWAY!

Sally Beauty Supply Haul

Halloween is a holiday for makeup-lovers, but even the most elaborate costumes don't have to break the bank! Using makeup items that you can repurpose in your everyday routine, there are endless possibilities for costumes that are semi-intricate, yet totally recognizable. This year, I've teamed up with Coupons.com to show you how to get one of the most recognized looks from the upcoming movie The Hunger Games: Catching Fire without spending a fortune. Bonus: stay tuned for the end of the post where you'll find a giveaway for a $100 e-gift card to Sephora so you can snag your own Halloween look affordably.

With a $50 gift card kindly provided, discounts from my Sally's card, and a heads up on Sally Beauty Supply discounts from Coupons.com, I was able to snag everything pictured above without going more than a few dollars over. Here's what I did to get the look:

1. Create an even base with a full coverage foundation and use a medium coverage concealer to correct discoloration and blemishes.
2. Prime eyes and lips to keep makeup staying perfect all night.
3. Lightly apply bronzer to give a natural, contoured glow to the cheeks and brush a soft shimmery pink blush on the apples for a natural, iridescent flush.
4. Apply a soft black or smoky grey to eyelids for a smoky effect and dab a small amount of red in the inner corner for a subtle pop.
5. Use false lashes to create a dramatic lash line or use a mascara primer to plump the appearance of lashes without the lash glue and falsies.
6. Finish the eye look with rhinestones applied along the lower lash line - nail gems make for the perfect size for the eye area.
7. Last, dab a light pink lip color on for a subtle flush.
8. Complete the look by looking pensively into the camera like you are going to conquer The Capitol and liberate the citizens of Panem.

Products Used:

  • femme couture Get Flawless Foundation
  • Palladio Herbal Liquid Concealer
  • femme couture Monster lash Mascara Primer
  • Palladio Eye Shadow & Liner Herbal Crayon in In the Buff & Gold Dust

  • Real Colors Bask Illuminating Bronzer in Cabana
  • femme couture Lip Creme Lip Primer in Neutral
  • femme couture Prime Wear Diamond Color in Radiant Rose
  • Cina Dial-A-Gem Kit
While you might not need to purchase a full face of makeup to complete the look, it's fantastic to know that you can without blowing your budget. Don't forget to check out the giveaway (U.S. only) below for a chance to get the ultimate dal on this year's Halloween look!

Review & Swatches: Londontown Lakur Enhanced Colour Polishes in Purple Reign, Weekend Cheers, Across the Pond, and Water in My Wellies

Londontown Lakur Enhanced Colour Polishes in Purple Reign, Weekend Cheers, Across the Pond, and Water in My Wellies
It's no secret that the nail art trend is kicking off its shoes and cozying up to the fire - it's here to stay for a bit!  While it might mean having fantastic, intricate, long-lasting, sometimes glitzy works of art on every finger, it can also mean damage. Deep, prolonged damage. Beauty lovers are no stranger to products and processes that might be less than beneficial for your health, but nails can be a particularly pesky and sometimes painful beauty bungle to fix. Londontown is a nail brand that has positioned itself to be there for you when your nails finally need a little TLC.

Londontown's line of Lakur Enhanced Colour polishes is 5-free, gluten-free, cruelty-free brand with nail lacquers formulated with vitamins, minerals, and vegetable protein to keep nails nourished and prevent cracking or splitting. They also boast a collection of 16 gorgeous shades, proving you don't have to sacrifice pretty nails for rehabbed ones. At $22 a bottle, these fall squarely in the luxury category making it pretty essential that they live up to their promises. Fortunately, I am beyond happy with their performance. Each of the 4 shades I tried apply smoothly, streak-free, have a high shine finish, have a speedy drying time, and last above the 2-days that polish typically average on my nail.

Purple Reign is a cream finish polish that has a royal purple feel with a hint of pastel.
Weekend Cheers is a bright pink with a nearly undetectable frost.
Across the Pond is a cream-finish deep blue that has become a go-to color for fall only to be topped by...
Water in my Wellies - a cream-finish green-greige that breathes new life into the earth-tone trend.

After using these polishes off and on for well over a month (only to alternate with my fave press on nails and at-home gel manicures), I've noticed the overall health of my nails has improved. While the processes I previously mentioned weren't horrible for my nails, it would take a while for my nails to regain the same hardness and length they had before I did them. I think using Lakur in the interim has made the downtime a lot shorter and lessened the negative side effects. Part of the strength I've noticed my nails having is due to Londontown's Nail Hardener - part of their Kur treatment line and the topic of a future blog post. But I can't help but think the good-for-you nail colour formula hasn't also contributed.

Would you try a $22 bottle of polish if it meant a mini physical therapy session for our nails with each mani?

Maybelline Brocade Collection Color Show Nail Polishes in Gilded Rose and Amethyst Couture

Maybelline Brocade Collection Color Show Nail Polishes in Gilded Rose and Amethyst Couture

As usual, Maybelline has come out with a holiday collection that would make any beauty-lover's mouth water. When I spotted the first display of polishes at my CVS, I was drawn like a moth to the flame and ended up buying the two that I could least resist from the Brocade collection: Gilded Rose and Amethyst Couture. At $3.99, resistance is futile.

Gilded Rose is a duo-chrome that consists of burnished gold shimmer and chunky metallic rose glitter. The consistency is thinner than many of the Maybelline polishes, including the holiday glitter polishes from last year, but it's easily layered to create an opaque finish that maintains the duochrome effect. Amethyst Couture is another duochrome with an emerald green shimmer base laced with deep purple glitter - very reminiscent of maleficent (my fave Disney villain). Unfortunately, this polish didn't live up to everything I expected. The consistency is thick to the point of making application difficult and it doesn't maintain the same complexity on the nail as it does in the bottle. Still, it makes for a nice deep purple on the nail, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to everyone.

Overall mixed feelings on my sampling of the nail polishes from the collection - have you tried them yet?

hello date night! Seriously friendly tips for date prep

Mr. MUMW and I have been at this dating thing for a while. After a little over 9 years, we've nearly perfected the art of the date-night. What I've found is that whether it's spontaneous or planned, there are a few key plays that go into looking and feeling good no matter where we go.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment or keep your look classic - either way you should feel comfortable and confident with what you're wearing.
  • Taking your look from day to date night can become routine - check out the quick tutorial below!
  • Garlic breath is as offensive at nine years as it is at day 1. And for the record, two garlic entrees don't cancel each other out - it just makes you both stinky. Be prepared by giving them a scrub beforehand and taking some fresh breath on the go!
Lately, I've been saying hello to fresh breath that lasts through the night with hello Seriously Friendly Oral Care. The line has super sleek packaging designed by BMW Designworks USA that definitely jumps off shelves and no-sting formulas sans alcohol, so hello's products are seriously friendly on the eyes and mouth. hello toothpaste and hello mouth wash are perfect for everyday use - day and night - and look fab on the countertop, while hello breath spray is a cute egg spritzer that fits in anything from an envelope clutch to a tote. Each comes in a more traditional Supermint flavor, but also offers up some more sassy (and tasty) options like Sweet Cinnamint, Pink Grapefruit Mint, and Mojito Mint. Made in the US and cruelty free, you can find hello in drugstores - check out their site for more retailers!

What are your tips for getting date night ready?

Get the Look for Fall with Mary Kay + Giveaway!

In the spirit of fall fashion, celebrity makeup artist Raychel Wayde is working with Mary Kay to put together a look that pull from the hottest fall trends. Keeping in mind that it can often be hard to go from the light, breezy looks of summer to the deep, bold trends of fall and winter, Wayde chose products with fantastic versatility. Wear them soft, or wear them bold, all of the products included in this plum-toned look can be worn together for the perfect fall look. Here's what's included:

Mary Kay At Play Eye Trio in On the Horizon - With a mid-tone plum, shimmery champagne, and mid-tone maroon, this shadow trio can be used both wet and dry for a deep purple smoky look or a soft hint of plum.
Mary Kay Mineral Cheek Color in Sparkling Cider - One of my favorite products from Mary Kay, Sparkling Cider is a soft neutral medium brown with gold shimmer.
Mary Kay Makeup Finishing Spray - harsh winter weather can take a toll on your makeup and a setting spray is just the ticket for getting it to last all day.
Mary Kay Lash Lone Lengthening Mascara - I've tried multiple Mary Kay mascaras, and this one is my favorite. Think Cover Girl's Clump Crusher Mascara, but on steroids - it lengthens my lashes while leaving them clump-free.
Mary Kay Eye Liner in Black - Surprisingly soft for an automatic liner, black is the perfect basic for any look, day or night.
Mary Kay Lip Liner in Plum - This gorgeous merlot glides on smoothly to add color and prime lips for lipstick without drying them out.
Mary Kay True Dimension Lipstick in Mystic Plum - If you love Lip Butters, you will adore these! Mystic Plum is a super saturated lipstick with a balmy finish that leaves my lips super hydrated - a necessity in winter weather.

Love the look? Win everything for yourself! Enter using the Rafflecopter widget at the bottom of the post and you can snag this fierce fall look for yourself.

Review & Swatches: Jane Cream Eye Shadow in Brilliant Bronze & Polished Pewter

Jane Cream Eye Shadow in Brilliant Bronze & Polished Pewter
Jane Cosmetics Cream Eye Shadows promise long-wearing quality from a cream-to-powder product. Unlike potted cream shadows, like Maybelline's Color Tattoos, Jane's is more like a thick liquid metal that lays smoothly and evenly across the lid with one swipe. Brilliant Bronze and Polished Pewter have hues exactly as their names suggest and have stellar pigmentation with the right amount of creaminess.

When applied these cream shadows are very easy to work with while they are still wet. Once they dry, however, it becomes a different story. As the consistency is solidifying, each shadow develops a scaly texture that turns to cracking if you apply a coat that's too thin. While building up the shadow is easy, blending around the edges makes for a messy, cracked transition from cream to powder products. From afar, it looks much like any other bold metallic shadow. But up close the texture becomes more apparent and the unavoidable transition between cream to powder is harsh. The texture also makes it difficult to layer powder products over the cream shadows and use them as a base - much like you would a Color Tattoo.

Still, these shadows promised all day, crease-free wear and they delivered! If you can get over the texture problems, you will have some shadows that will last fade, crease, and flake-free throughout even the longest days.

I'm torn with Jane's Cream Eye Shadows. For basic looks where you don't need to worry about cream-to-powder transitions, or being examined up close, these are great for $8 - especially considering how long they wear. But these took a fair amount of working with to get the consistency and blending seen in the pictures below, and that might be more than some are willing to work for - even if it does mean killer molten metal eyes.

Have you tried Jane Cream Eye Shadows?
