Review & Swatches: Smashbox On the Rocks Photo Op Eye Shadow Luxe Palette Review

As a part of their holiday collection, Smashbox released the On the Rocks Photo Op Eyeshadow Palette – one of two shadow palettes in their holiday line. In-keeping with their holographic gemstone themed packaging, the outside of the palette is brilliantly decorated, with a shadow selection that's just as faceted.

This palette contains 28 eyeshadows with a mixture of shades and finishes. Although it's cooler-leaning overall, there are some warm neutrals to be found on the left side of the palette. These quickly fade into blues, purples, and smoky, vampy shades. While the shimmery and glitter finishes are beautiful, I was most impressed with the matte shadows – particularly Royal and Navy. Both shadows are rich matte gem tones that completely lack chalkiness. They apply smoothly, evenly, and pack a punch of pigment. Overall, it's a range of shadows that performs beautifully, and (despite the number of cool shadows) is a palette that will flatter a wide variety of skin tones.

The palette is cardboard – although it does have a padded exterior, and the magnetic closure is secure enough to remain clasped during travel. The palette has a sizable mirror which gives it a ton of utility when traveling. For $42, I think this palette is a great purchase for those wanting to expand their shadow shade range without breaking the bank. Compared to its smaller holiday counterpart, I would say it's the better deal. You get double the shadows for just a few more dollars. It would go well with their On the Rocks Always Sharp Liner set!
