Review: Rimmel ScandalEyes Retro Glam Mascara

Rimmel Retro Glam Mascara

Pros:

  • Light formula doesn't weigh down lashes
  • Wand helps curl lashes
  • The bristles and formula team up for great length and separation
  • Lasts all day without smudging or flaking

Cons:

  • The wand tends to collect product at the end that can lead to messy application if you don't take care to clean it off.
Verdict: For $6.99, this is a great mascara! Something viewers were mentioning in the comment section of the video is how similar the wand looks to the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, and one said she prefers Rimmel's Retro Glam to it! There is a waterproof version of this mascara, but given the great lasting power I experienced, I don't think I would recommend it unless you have chronic issues with even the toughest mascaras running on you.

Makeup Wars: Peach & Coral Lip Must-Haves

This week on Makeup Wars, we're talking about peach and coral lippies - just in time for spring and summer! Narrowing down a handful of each was no simple task since it's easily one of the largest color groups in my lip arsenal. But I took on the challenge and have a serious group of swatches to show for it. See what I picked below, then see what everyone else picked by following the links at the bottom of the post!
  • Too Face Melted Lipstick in Melted Coral - For a long-lasting, vibrant coral lip color, Too Faced newest addition to their lip line is where it's at.
  • tarte Butter Lipstick in Sweet Peach - gives a soft peach pigmented to the lips with an ultra-nourishing finish.
  • tarte LipSurgence Lipgloss in Blissful - Gloss-lovers that want a soft, sheer peach finish that lasts longer than your average lip sheen will love tarte's recent add-on to the LipSurgence line.
  • Starlooks Lipgloss in Tipsy - For a gloss with a more opaque finish, Starlook's gloss in Tipsy is a great alternative for those that prefer non-sticky, cream-finish glosses that apply evenly.
  • NYC Big Bold Plumping Lip Gloss - For what's easily the most affordable coral gloss I'm loving, try NYC's Big Bold Plumping Lip Gloss. They pack a surprising pigment punch and provide a high-shine gloss finish that visually plumps lips!
  • MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Rouge #18 - Already a much-raved-about product on this blog, these lip stains absolutely will not come off until you want them too. You even get an ultra-shiny gloss on the other side that doesn't effect the wear time of the stain. #18 is the perfect light coral for summer!
  • Maybelline Vivids Lipstick in Shocking Coral - For a bright pink-leaning coral lipstick, Shocking Coral is everything you could want!
  • Jouer's Lip Gloss in Hamptons - Those gloss provides an understated peach with with a faint gold shimmer.
  • City Color Matte Lipstick in Coral - Who says matte is just for winter? City Color does matte lipsticks super-affordably and with great pigmentation. Coral is a vibrant pastel shade great for those who might not want a coral that's overwhelmingly bright.
  • bareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lipgloss in Crowd Surfer - For a pink-leaning coral gloss with a hint of shimmer, Crows Surfer from the Marvelous Moxie line is perfection!

What corals and peaches are you loving for spring?

5 Products, 5 Minutes, 1 Look

No one likes a rushed morning, but sometimes one too many snoozes can leave you with 15 minutes to get up and out the door. What do you sacrifice? To help me get through as many steps as possible, I've come up with a way to shave all but 5 minutes off my morning makeup routine. When it comes to an abbreviated look, the #1 thing I look for are good multi-taskers. They keep you from having to reach for more products than you have time for so that you can maximize what little time you might have. Here is a tutorial for the 5 minute look I've been loving lately, and the products I used to create it!

Products Used:

  1. em Cosmetics Chiaroscuro in Light review
  2. it Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Color Correcting Cream
  3. NARS Matte Multiple in Siam
  4. Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder
  5. Rimmel Scandaleyes Retro Glam Mascara

Review & Swatches: Makeup Geek Ultimate Eyeshadow Palette

Makeup Geek Ultimate Eyeshadow Palette

Maybe it's the native Texan inside, but when it came to try my first Makeup Geeks products, I decided to go big or go home. I wanted to try a nice mix of neutrals and bolds from the brand, so I picked up the Ultimate Palette! Complete with 27 shades and a large Z-palette, this set of shadows has just about everything - a mix of colors, textures, and a palette to store them all in. The shadows included are:

  • Appletini –  Shimmery Apple green with flecks of gold
  • Bada Bing –  Deep Brown with flecks of gold
  • Beaches & Cream –  Creamy Matte Natural Beige with Just A Hint of Peach
  • Bitten –  Matte deep maroon red
  • Brown Sugar –  Warm Shimmery copper brown
  • Cocoa Bear –  Matte golden brown
  • Corrupt –  Intense matte black with a very subtle sparkle
  • Cosmopolitan –  Rose Gold with gold flecks and a shimmery finish
  • Country Girl –  Shimmery pink brown
  • Drama Queen –  A densely dark purple with a shimmery finish
  • Envy –  Deep metallic green
  • Gold Digger –  True metallic gold
  • Graphite –  Light graphite grey with flecks of silver
  • Last Dance –  Satin medium to deep plummy brown
  • Mermaid –  Metallic teal with reflects gold
  • Moondust –  Metallic silver taupe
  • Ocean Breeze –  Metallic deep green/blue
  • Peach Smoothie –  A light peach beige with a soft matte finish
  • Pixie Dust –  Shimmery Lime green
  • Poolside –  Bright shimmery teal with specks of gold
  • Pretentious –  Metallic bronze
  • Sensuous –  Shimmery Purple with Flecks of Silver
  • Shimma Shimma –  Metallic Champagne
  • Simply Marlena –  Rosey pink with purple undertone and gold flecks
  • Twilight –  Pale Shimmery Muted Purple
  • Unexpected –  Matte Pale Pink Brown
  • Vanilla Bean –  Light Shimmer with Peachy Beige Undertone

Because this palette is jam-packed, I'll spare you the minor details and just say this: they are fantastic! The mattes are smooth, pigmented, and wonderfully buildable - great for all over wear, or blending shades in the crease. The shimmery shadows are seriously pigmented, with buttery textures, and ultra-fine glimmer. The only shade I would call outright glittery is Bada Bing - a matte deep chocolate brown with gold flecks. The base is smooth, and I didn't encounter any fallout with the glitter!

Most won't need all of the shades in this palette, but I would certainly recommend them. Luckily, you can purchase them for $5.99 individually - $7.99 if you would prefer they come in a compact. So pick and choose which shadows most appeal to you to create a completely customize, yet super affordable palette!

tarte Kiss and Makeup 5 piece Amazonian Butter Lipstick Set

tarte Kiss and Makeup 5 piece Amazonian Butter Lipstick Set
Like most, I've fallen headlong into the butter-themed lip craze. Who doesn't love the idea of a a nourishing balm that glides on and offers some pigment? While I've kept my sights relatively narrow, focusing mainly on the Revlon Lip Butter range (the collection that launch a thousand "butter" lippies), I've wanted to branch into newer lines from brands I know and love. First up: tarte. While perusing ULTA's site for value sets, I stumbled upon tarte's Kiss and Makeup 5 piece Amazonian Butter Lipstick Set - a collection of 5 full size lipsticks! The shades included are:

Pink Poinsettia - peachy pink
Angelic Nude - pink-nude
Merry Berry - brown-toned berry with subtle purple shimmer
Candy Red - pink-leaning red
Sweet Peach - soft peachy coral

Each one comes packaged in a beautifully patterned cardboard tube. All but Merry Berry have cream finishes with smooth textures that glide on the lips. While the same can be said for Berry Merry, the slight shimmer adds the tiniest amount of texture that I only noticed when blotting my lips together. While all were moisturizing and provided even, creamy coverage, the finish suffers the same short fate that so many other lip butters do - it wears off after about an hour or two. Fortunately, the bolder shades stain the lips slightly so even after the finish is gone, the lips still have a gorgeous tint!

While these are very comparable to Revlon's Lip Butters, I would say they are creamier, apply more evenly than many of the shades, and have a more refined texture than the Lip Butters that contain shimmer. That being said, Lip Butters are about half the price of tarte's Amazonian Lip Butters ($16). Given the subtle differences, I can't say I would spend that on one - but this set is an excellent deal! I think this is not only a great way to sample multiple flattering shades from the tarte Amazonian Butter Lipstick line, but also a good way to try new shades if it's a formula you already know and love. This gem is an online-only steal - get it while it lasts!

Review & Swatches: Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Melted Violet and Melted Coral

Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Melted Violet and Melted Coral
Just in time for spring and summer, Too Faced has come out with some seriously pigmented liquid lippies that promise long wear for the sweltering days ahead - days I'm not sure are coming anytime soon, amiright, Midwest? In all of the promotional images I've seen for the Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick, the images of lips are drenched with an opaque lip color with a pretty thick-looking liquid texture, leading me to believe these would be a type of long-wearing lipstick/lip gloss hybrid. Not quite...

I picked up the shades Melted Violet (vibrant violet) and Melted Coral (a hot coral). Both apply smoothly and have a cream finish - no shimmer or sparkle. The only difference in formula I noticed between the two is that Melted Coral has a tendency to fall in any fine lip lines you might have, and doesn't flatter dry, flaking lips as well as Melted Violet does. While it took two coats to get both to appear similar on my lips as they did in the images, I found that the texture would never fully set that way before it would wipe of on a cup or get eaten away. Still, the pigment underneath stained the lips for hours, staying just as vibrant at hour 4 as it was at the start. One thing to note with the wear, however is that a balm is definitely necessary if you are prone to dry lips. These aren't what I would call nourishing!

The packaging is a convenient squeeze tube with a built-in applicator that manages to get a relatively precise application - great for on the go! Overall, I think there is a place in some makeup-lovers' collection for these long-wear, vibrant lip stains, but those with lips prone to dryness or flaking will want to look elsewhere for high impact pigment with nourishing wear. While there are many alternatives out there (like MUFE's Aqua Rouge, or Cover Girl's All Day Lip Color), the colors here are hard to duplicate.

Review & Swatches: NYX Adorable Palette

NYX is at it again with (relatively) new 6 pan palettes! While some might remember the Smokey Eye Palette, or the disappointment of the Natural Eye Palette, their Sex Bomb Femme Fatale and Adorable Palettes are different animals that boast a wider range of shades, with a colorful point of interest.

The Adorable Palette contains a mix of textures, with mattes, satins, and even some glitter. Unlike the Natural Eye Palette, the shadow range contains some nice contrast while still sticking largely to neutrals. Unlike so many affordable matte shadows, each one in this palette applies smoothly and has great color payoff! In this palette ($7.49) you don't just get one matte shadow - you get 4, including a soft, feminine pink. Beyond those, there's also a deep chocolate brown with gold glitter and a sheer shimmery cream.

For those that found NYX's Natural Eye Palette to be a bit of a letdown, I think the Adorable Palette will restore your faith in their shadow palettes! It's great for the neutral-lover, but also adds a little bit of romance in with the soft pink.

4 or more TAG!

I'm a huge fan of the monthly favorites, but I stumbled on a YouTube tag from JAMbeauty89 (originally created by ItsKeerstin!) that made me rethink what really determines a product's "favorite" status. Sure, I have impulse loves that suit the look I'm loving at the moment - and those a great. But what might speak more to just how great a product is, is how many of a given product I own - 4 or more to be exact. This tag is all about digging through your collection to find those products that you loved so much, you bought multiples - whether they are different shades, or backups for when you run out. Watch the video above, or read on below to find out what I found in my collection!

Products mentioned & reviews:

  • Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquers - the smooth application and opaque, pigmented finish makes these fantastic lippies to keep on hand.
  • ELF Smudge Pots - they're not only some of the most affordable cream shadows I've used, but also some of the most effective. They come in an array of colors, and at $2 a pop, it's easy to try them all!
  • City Color Be Matte Blush - another cheapie must-have, these blushes provide perfectly matte, buildable wear with amazing pigmentation and at $2.99 a blush!
  • MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Rouge - Although they are pricier, these liquid lipsticks embody everything a lip stain should in my book: intense pigmentation, complete opacity, non-drying, long-lasting wear (over 6 hours!)
  • Naked Cosmetics Pigment stacks in...
  • Maybelline Color Tattoo Pigments - while they don't have the diverse color range, Maybelline Color Tatoos are a great alternative to Naked Cosmetics pigment stacks for those that like pigments, but don't use them enough to warrant purchasing a pigment stack.
I TAG YOU!

Review & Demo: Milani Brow Tint Pen

Looking for a precise, yet natural brow tool? A felt tip marker might be what you're looking for! While there are only a few available in the drugstore, Milani's Brow Tint Pen is among the few. Promising long-wearing, quick-drying styling, the applicator has a small, precise felt tip and dispenses product like it's a stain.

PROS:

  • Stain finish allows for easy, buildable coverage
  • Tapered felt tip creates thin, natural strokes
  • Lasts long when used to fill in, and provide structure to, brows
  • Affordable ($5.99)

Cons:

  • I didn't get all-day wear when I applied it to the outer tail end of my brows - where my hair is naturally more sparse.
Overall, if you think this type of applicator and the type of coverage it provides is your style, Milani's pen is well worth the try given the great eprformance! However, if you have sparse brows all-over, and are you might want to consider a product that doesn't need to cling to brow hair to get maximum lasting power.

Review & Swatches: Too Faced La Créme Color Drenched Lip Creams in Nude Beach, Honey Bear, and Razzle Dazzle Rose

Too Faced Color Drenched Lip Cremes in Nude Beach, Honey Bear, and Razzle Dazzle Rose

It's taken me a while, but after finding a great deal on HSN paired with a 15% off coupon, I figured there was no time like the present to give Too Faced La Créme Color Drenched Lip Cremes a go! Promising rich, creamy colors with hydrating ingredients, each of these retail for $22 individually (although the trio of shades below is $39 purchased together on HSN). Speaking of, the shades included are as follows:

Nude Beach - Nude Peach
Honey Bear - Toasted Mauve
Razzle Dazzle Rose - Pink Rose

Beyond the luxe-looking (and feeling) brushed metallic tube, the formula feels luxurious on the lips as well. With even application and rich pigmentation, these perform very similar to Revlon's Lip Butters - but with a more even application. Unfortunately, the buttery-soft texture also leads to a short wear-time - about the same as a gloss. That means frequent reapplication and blowing through was is a fairly costly product. Still, for those who battle dry, chapped lips but still want some lush color payoff, each swipe could be worth it. The only other notable quality regarding texture is the slight difference between those that are cream-finish (Nude Beach and Razzle Dazzle Rose), and those that have somewhat of a shimmer (Honey Bear). Although it's subtle - even barely noticeable once on the lips - the shimmer adds a tinge of gritty-ness. Beyond the downside that you might buzz through these pretty quickly, they have a fantastic formula!
